Whichever industry you’re in, if you’re in the market for a new spray booth, you need to keep in mind the size that you are looking for. Among other questions, ask yourself: what is the nature of your service? Of course, if you’re in the automotive industry then you’ll need to accommodate for vehicles of all sizes. For the commercial sector, you’ll be thinking about public transportation.
And so on and so forth. We’re speaking broadly here, because there are a few more specific things that you need to know. Without further ado, here’s how you determine the best size for your spray booth.
Industries aside, the bigger the spray booth the bigger your operational costs will be. The fans and motors are among the highest operational costs in an average spray booth system, so you’ll need to keep these in mind.
Another consideration is practicality. Your booth needs to be big enough that the operator and other staff members can move around with ease – at the very least, there needs to be enough space for fluid arm movement.
Standard sizings for spray booths in the automotive industry start from 7m up to 9m/10m in length and 4m – 4.5m wide. Commercial vehicles such as buses and coaches can increase to 18m long and 5m-6m wide while more specialised applications such train carriages or aerospace parts require even larger tunnel booths, usually 30m and longer.
To ensure that your booth is the correct size for your business needs you should determine your biggest product envelope, for example the largest vehicle that you work on or how many panels you need to paint at the same time. You’ll need to add 1m allowance around each side, 1.5m if you use steps or ladders within the booth.
The height of your spray booth is largely determined by the overall height of the largest item to be painted. Ideally you will need 1m of clearance (and don’t forget extra height for any holding fixtures you have).
When figuring out your height, you need sufficient space so that the object being sprayed isn’t so close to the ceiling that the ceiling gets a coat, too. You also need to consider any spray work needed on the underside or on top of the object. Is it elevated enough as to allow work to be carried out underneath?
For automotive booths, generally speaking, light commercial vans with a height of 2.7/2.8m would fit comfortably within a Junair booth 3.1m high. However, if you need to paint the roof too, then you should opt for the 3.6m high.
