How does powder coating work?
A common practise in a variety of sectors, powder coating is used to coat almost any object with a durable paint finish. It is used for both aesthetic purposes and to protect the substrate underneath from being damaged by natural elements.
The process works by applying a dry powder with an electric charge to a clean metal surface using a power application gun or fluidised bed which adheres powder to the surface of the metal. Following this, the object is cured in an oven to give a smooth coating and a harder finish than conventional paint.
What is powder coating used on?
Powder coating is a way to paint or spray metal for both cosmetic and protective purposes. The process is used across a variety of sectors, it is used on thousands of items and products. It can be used to re-colour objects after damage for cosmetic reasons, or to spray a protective layer, to protect items from harsh elements.
The benefits of powder coating
Powder coating systems, as opposed to conventional painting processes, are beneficial in a number of ways. Powder coating provides a longer lasting and tougher finish compared to other methods of coating, meaning it will better protect the metal underneath. The object can be given almost any colour, making it highly customisable to suit the clients requirements.
Powder coating gives an uniform finish to any items that are sprayed, and because it is sprayed and then baked, there is no colour running or streaks when using this method, making it perfect for both mass production and small batch spraying. Another benefit, and perhaps one of the most important, is that powder coating uses no solvents in the process, meaning less toxicity for the operator of the spray booth, and the environment.
